Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg – Production Research Department (ECP)

The ZSW is an industry-oriented, internationally leading research institute in the field of battery research. Especially with its established research platform for the industrial production of large-format lithium-ion cells (FPL), the ZSW contributes significantly in the area of technology transfer from research to industry. In particular, the FPL offers a process-reliable test environment to conduct research on the mutual influence of cell chemistry, cell design and manufacturing technology with regard to quality, safety and manufacturing costs. Questions about inline sensor technology, manufacturing tolerances or cost-efficient processes can be evaluated under close-to-production conditions. In addition, the FPL allows for verification of advanced cell chemistries trough prototyping and small pre-production runs.

The ZSW conducts research activities within the project Action that is part of the greenBatt research cluster. Thereby the ZSW places emphasis on production and comparative characterization of electrode slurries, electrodes and battery cells obtained from conventional active materials, and semi-finished products and battery cells, which contain a proportion of recycled active material. Particular interest is on rheological properties, stability (shelf life) and processability for electrode slurries. Electrodes are investigated regarding their morphological characteristics, adhesion coating/substrate, homogeneity and the tendency to form coating defects. The resulting battery cells are characterized in terms of cell performance, quality, safety and service life.
