ONLINE-SEMINAR Green Batteries Through Computational Life Cycle Engineering

Join us for our online seminar on GREEN BATTERIES THROUGH COMPUTATIONAL LIFE CYCLE ENGINEERING (March 28th, 2022 from 9 am to 4:30 pm at Advanced Battery Conference). The seminar is organized by Felipe Cerdas and Alexander Kaluza and includes multiple battery experts from Battery Lab Factory (BLB) at Technische Universität Braunschweig.

The seminar provides an overview of the state of research regarding sustainability assessment along the life cycle of traction batteries. The method of computational life cycle engineering will be introduced and discussed and related to specific issues in the field of traction batteries and electromobility. The programme includes:
· Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment, Social Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Engineering, in particular
· Overview of the state of the art in life cycle environmental assessment of traction batteries and battery electric vehicles (Raw materials and sustainable supply chains, Manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries, Use stage of electric vehicles and influence of electricity mix, Sustainable recycling pathways for lithium-ion batteries)
· Computational Life Cycle Engineering for traction batteries including an application example
· Consolidation of findings and discussion of pathways for further development of sustainable traction batteries.

Special Issue “Particle Design and Processing for Battery Production”

With the very fast-growing markets of electrical vehicles (EVs), it is absolutely necessary to improve battery design and the long process chain of battery production, including pack and module, cells, electrodes, and particularly functional particles as active material in anode and cathode electrodes. For the future battery generations, the design and production of solid electrolyte particles for all solid-state batteries are of special interest. Improvements in active and passive material particles and their processing should result in batteries with a high level of safety, increased environmental friendliness, and lower cost. This Special Issue (SI) aims to present the latest studies on all aspects related to the design, synthesis, and fabrication of anode and cathode active material particles from primary and secondary material resources as well as electronic and ionic conductive particles (carbon additives and solid electrolyte particles). Moreover, particles’ behavior during the processing of anode and cathode slurries, electrodes, and cells of different battery generations as well as safety concerns via experimental and modeling/simulation investigations are in the focus of this SI. Additionally, studies about lifecycle analysis and cost of battery material particles and their production and processing are welcome. The SI includes not only lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) but also other batteries with potential for commercial production and marketing.

Special Issue “New Science Based Concepts for Increased Efficiency in Battery Recycling 2022”

Dear Colleagues,

There is no doubt that e-mobility will become a tremendous driving force for our future life. High demand for advanced materials in the batteries as well as political pressures in terms of collection and recycling rates raise the need for an extensive recovery of critical elements and a more sustainable use of raw materials. This Special Issue aims to make significant progress in designing innovative processes and understanding related mechanisms in the context of battery recycling. Although we expect the majority of papers to address the latest scientific achievements in the area of lithium-based systems, the entire range from lead, to nickel–metal–hydride, to high-temperature vanadium sodium cells is covered by this compilation. Of special interest are concepts for future post-Li-systems including all solid-state cell designs. We are not focusing on consumer behavior, collection, legal, and regulation issues and market development. Papers dealing with automized disassambly/dismantling, sensor-based sorting, new concepts for comminution and classification, thermal conditioning, innovations in hydro- and pyrometallurgical processing, safety aspects regarding recycling processes, post-mortem analysis with regards to cell chemistry changes, as well as mass flow analysis and optimization models for recycling efficiency are welcome.

The idea of a circular economy is the point of origin for contributions, aiming at minimizing of waste streams and promoting re-use/recirculation of components, functional materials as well as elements. In order to minimize material losses and energy consumption, this Issue explores concepts for optimization concerning the interfaces between mechanical and thermal pre-treatments with metallurgical processes. Considering both principle aspects of circular economy and material design, the topics of special interest are those concerning recovery and re-use of critical metals like lithium, since their importance for technological applications often goes along with a lack of supply on the world market. This Special Issue follows the 2020 issue.
