Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF)

The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology develops innovative technologies so that mineral and metalliferous raw materials can be made available and used more efficiently recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. In context of the circular economy, the institute investigates non-invasive methods for the raw materials exploration, processing with classical and biotechnological methods as well as process metallurgy. Resource characterization, system simulation and sustainability assessment are central competences in order to quantify and improve the resource and energy efficiency of processes.

HIF takes part in 5 projects within the research cluster and is responsible for the following tasks: BatMix (coordinator) – quantitative assessment of the future raw material mix for the battery production; DIGISORT – application of multi-sensor systems and intelligent image data processing for the characterization of material flows of variable composition; ecoLiga – flotation treatment for the separation of carbon materials from active mass; EarLiMet – chemical characterization for the hydrometallurgical recovery of lithium as well as method development in analytics and quality assurance; HydroLiBRec – individual process and overall system simulation for battery recycling processes as well as identification of design for recycling indicators.
